Morimoto 2.0 - This was our second time at the Iron Chef's restaurant having gone on our last trip to NYC back in April. However, F&E wanted to check it out and we had a good enough experience last time to want to come back.
We asked the waiter about the tasting menu and it sounded as though many of the same things were being served again since our last trip. So we made a request that F&E have the standard tasting while we had something a little different. The kitchen was able to accomodate us accordingly.
1. toro tartare, osetra caviar, crème fraîche, wasabi, dashi-soy - Just like before. A beautifully presented dish and probably just as tasty as last time.
2. hamachi tartare, osetra caviar, crème fraîche, wasabi, dashi-soy - Somewhat of a play on the same concept as the toro tartare and just as good. Everything tasted very fresh and was texturally pleasing.
3. tai snapper - Not a fan of this last time. Glad we didn't get this again. Although, F&E seemed to not dislike it that much.
4. fluke tail - Not very good. It had a very strange consistency, very chewy and veiny.
5. kanpachi - This was awesome! Not sure what kind of sauce with came with but it was awesome!
6. home smoked salmon ravioli, japanese sweet yams, salmon roe, yuzu gelee - Don't really remember what this tasted like, but I think we enjoyed it.
7. oyster foie gras, market oysters, foie gras, uni, teriyaki sauce - Nice and sweet.
8. assorted sashimi - All high quality fish. Not a loser in the bunch.
9. surf & turf, wagyu filet & hamachi ribbons, herbed potatoes, crushed citrus & avocado - We didn't like that the last time. F&E didn't seem to have any issues with it.
10. ishi yaki buri bop, yellowtail on rice cooked at your table in a hot stone bowl - Very nice flavors. But would have liked the bowl to be hotter and the rice to be cooked a bit crispier. Our version was a bit mushy, which took away from how good this dish could have been. Still pretty tasty though.
11. pear cake with ginger marshmallow - Ginger in marshmellows are a no no. Wasn't a fan of this dessert. The cake was ok, but not memorable.
Our expectations were tempered having already been here once. Although not every dish was a winner, we agreed that this second time around was better than the first. Even so, we'd likely not return. Not quite yummy enough to warrant a third trip.
