Four days in Atlanta. Three meals a day. That gave us twelve opportunities to get fried chicken. Yes, fried chicken for breakfast would had been an option were it available. With numerous options in the greater metro area, we cross referenced a few choices with Yelp! and Trang's word of mouth. After driving around and finding our first options closed for the night (most mom and pop places closed before 8 pm), we ended up at Wisteria. A small establishment along, what appeared to be, a mini-restaurant row serving up "New Southern" cuisine.
1. kumamoto oysters - Not entirely sure where these were from. They lacked the characteristic, natural sweetness of the ones we've had before. Not bad, but not great either.
2. Pimento Cheese Deviled Eggs - Not much you can do wrong to deviled eggs. The inclusion of pimento gave this version an added dimension. Very tasty.
3. Molasses-Rubbed Pork Tenderloin, sweet potato soufflé topped with an onion, apple and walnut relish - The pork was well-prepared, but lacked any depth to really put it over the top. The sweet potatos were very delicious.
4. All Natural Iron Skillet Fried Chicken, bacon braised collard greens with sweet corn pudding and mushroom-herb broth - Crispy and juicy, like a well done fried chicken should be. The only complaint was that it was served atop the collard greens and the herb broth. The liquid creeped onto the chicken, diminishing it's crispiness. Even with a little bit of soggy skin, the chicken was still very good. However, the shining star of the dish was the sweet corn pudding. Corn bread is always a favorite. But this preparation was fantastic. We could have eaten a whole loaf/tray of these things. Crispy on top, sweet, with a velvety-crumble in the middle.
side: braised greens mac and cheese - If you're not having waffles with your fried chicken, mac and cheese is the next best thing. The complimentary textures of the bread crumbs and the cheesy macaroni was superb. The braised greens helped add a bit of levity to a normally heavy dish. 1. kumamoto oysters - Not entirely sure where these were from. side: sweet potato frites - A disappointing dish. But probably more of a result from high expectations rather than from execution. There are a variety of dishes that are synonymous with Southern cuisine and sweet potatoes are one of them. Therefore, we were expecting to be blown away this these. However, they left us wanting. The exterior lacked the crispiness that makes for good fries. The flavors were not bad, but not what they could have been. Overall, a so-so dish.
The Wisteria dining experience was very good. Although there were some hit and misses, we had a very pleasant dinner overall. The restaurant interior was a bit dark, so it made for a more formal dinner, but it had a light and energetic vibe. The service was very attentive and the prices were reasonable. This is a place we'd definitely contemplate returning to in order to see what else they have to offer on the menu.
