Pappy's Smokehouse

The one thing I was most excited about during our trip to St. Louis was the opportunity to try St. Louis-style BBQ. St. Louis-style barbecue sauce is generally sweet and spicy, based in tomato sauce and thinned slightly with vinegar. It is not as sweet and thick as Kansas City-style barbecue sauce or as spicy-hot and thin as the sauce from Texas. When we checked Yelp and inquired with friends, the only BBQ place that consistently came up a winner was Pappy's Smokehouse.

bottle
Three BBQ sauces to choose from: Pappy's Original, Sweet Baby Jane and Holly's Hot Sauce

ribs
1. st.louis ribs, pulled pork, sweet potato fries, baked beans. Quite delicious, the meat was tender and flavorful - much better than our previous night's BBQ at the Shaved Duck. Pappy's original sauce was sweet and tangy, with a hint of fire. The sauce is actually bottled and sold. If it weren't for the fact that we did carry-on for the flight, we would definitely have bought some bottles to bring back to LA.

corn
2. fried corn - This sounded better than it tasted. Frying the corn really dried up the kernels and made the corn very chewy. We definitely prefer roasted corn more than this fried version.

Overall, one of the more memorable meals of the trip. We went in for lunch at about 11:30 or so and had to wait about 30-45 minutes to get to the front of the line. Although worth the wait, Pappy's has nothing on Fat Matts in Atlanta, which still remains Ray's favorite BBQ spot to date.
