Peameal Bacon
No trip to Toronto would be complete without a visit to one of the city's most popular landmarks, the St. Lawrence Market, voted number one food market in the world by National Geographic in 2012. We love trying every city's local and signature eats and food markets are a great place to do so. The St. Lawrence market is no exception: butcher shops, produce stands, cheese mongers, food stands, bakeries, restaurants - there is something deliciously yummy around every turn.
Peameal Bacon-2
Carousel Bakery is the most popular stall in the market, frequented by locals and tourists for their "world-famous" peameal bacon sandwich, also known as Toronto's signature dish. Peameal bacon is a boneless cured pork loin rolled in cornmeal. The cornmeal helps seal in the moisture and imparts a salty crunch to the bacon when deep-fried. The bakery sells tons of other stuff but make sure you leave with a peamal bacon sandwich in your hands!

Peameal Bacon-3
Peameal Bacon Sandwich - One of the most memorable foods we had on the trip. The bread was soft (almost like a Hawaiian bun) and the peameal bacon was moist, flavorful and crunchy from the cornmeal. It's not like the bacon we eat in American breakfasts and burgers. Peameal bacon has the texture and consistency of a thin, fatty piece of pork. We added a touch of mustard for extra spice. Delicious!
