Our version of the "holy grail" of food is to find and eat the "best" version of a dish. While in our experience, the question of "what is the best...?" is subjective and can never be answered, the quest to find the answer is not a fruitless one. We've been lucky enough to find the answer for ourselves a few times, partaking in what is widely considered the world's best hot dog and steak.

When we travel, it is always our goal to frequent the "best" food the area has to offer.  Sometimes we'll check out the "best burger in town" or the "best pork chop in town" but on occasions you visit a place that is "the best", full stop.  Not "in town", not "in the state".  The best.  Period.  So when we arrived in Louisiana, on top of the list was to find the best Southern food and more importantly, the best fried chicken. Thanks to some foodie friends, we ended up at Willie Mae's, home of America's best fried chicken.

Willie Mae's is about a 10 minute drive from the French Quarter.  The restaurant is located in a residential area inside a corner building that could have doubled as a local liquor store.  We arrived early to ensure our place in line as we hear the line tends to stretch down the block.

America's Best Fried Chicken, mac & cheese

The first bite was unmistakeably delicious. The chicken was serving piping hot. The thin golden-brown outer shell could not be crispier and easily gave way to the tender and moist meat.  Every bite was delicious and only confirmed why this was the best fried chicken in America. All the sides (peas, mac and cheese and cornbread) were standard and didn't stand out when compared to the chicken.

The meal at Willie Mae's was one of our favorites during our visit to New Orleans. In fact, the newest issue of Bon Appetit also highlights Willie's as a must-eat in NOLA. The combination of great food and outstanding service ensures that any future trip to New Orleans will, without a doubt, include another trip to Willie Mae's!
